I am currently in the market for a new main gaming monitor. I currently have a VG279QM which is 27" IPS 280hz 1080p.
I am searching for a 1440p 27" monitor, but I am looking to improve my color clarity and smoothness of gameplay. I have seen a lot about the PG27AQN (IPS 27" 360hz) and PG27AQMD (OLED 27" 240hz) and I am really torn. I mostly play competitive games like cs2 and overwatch, but I also use my PC for AAA titles, watching movies etc so I do like having good color clarity and graphics, which is why I am opting for a 1440p. I am simply looking for insight, as I've had this current monitor for ages so I am out of the loop.

Thanks

If you have the budget, OLED is vastly superior over all other panel technologies for gaming. Because each pixel in the display is self illuminated and can effectively turn itself off, this results in extremely fast pixel response times with virtually no ghosting. Other panel types like IPS take more time to change each pixel as things move across the screen, which is when you will see a trail behind fast moving objects. OLED panels effectively solve this problem entirely.

As far as tradeoffs, a 240Hz panel is already more than enough for playing video games, especially at 1440p. The other monitor you listed, with a 360Hz refresh rate, is nothing more than a gimmick. Most people cannot see a difference past 240Hz. You will absolutely get more use out of a monitor with OLED versus a monitor with an IPS panel and higher refresh rate.

OLED panels do have some drawbacks, however, as they generally don't get as bright as other panel types, and they tend to be less color accurate. You can alleviate this issue by picking up a monitor with QD OLED, which will have more accurate colors. The monitor you listed, the PG27AQMD, does not have a QD OLED panel. It's also had firmware issues and does not support HDMI 2.1. If it was my purchase, I would go with a different monitor. I would look into something like the Corsair Xeneon 27QHD240 instead. It's the same panel as the ROG monitor, but supports HDMI 2.1 support, and includes a 3 year warranty for protection against dead pixels or burn in. Hope this helped, take care.

I still have reservations about OLED burn-in when it comes to gaming. Static items that can be hours at a time multiple days in a row like a HUD or compass or even the Start Menu leaves you vulnerable to it.

Yes modern OLEDs are better but you have to ask yourself with the price of an OLED monitor "is that something I'm willing to risk"?
