I've installed all the required plugins and codecs and Irfanview now opens AVIF files with no problem, however if I open a file which is in a folder that contains a bunch of other image files and I start scrolling through the files in the folder (inside Irfanview) it will show me all files except the AVIF files. Those it just skips, even though when I double click on them outright it shows them no problem.

Anyone know what the problem may be?

Clarify:

"I start scrolling through the files in the folder (inside Irfanview) it will show me all files except the AVIF files. Those it just skips, even though when I double click on them outright it shows them no problem."

If the scroll is not showing the AVIF files (skipped?) how are the files being double clicked?

What app, if any, is the default app to use when a AVIF file is clicked?

When I say scrolling I don't mean in Windows Explorer, but in Irfanview. When you open an image in Irfanview, if you scroll it will move to the next file in the same folder and show you that image. However in my case, it will just skip over the AVIF images and move to the next image after it.

When I referred to double clicking I meant when I close Irfanview and look at the folder in Windows Explorer and then double click from there. That will result in the AVIF image being opened in Irfanview.

Regarding "However in my case, it will just skip over the AVIF images and move to the next image after it."

And that next imgage file is AVIF?

Clicking and scrolling seemed to be involved.

I did some googling using "infranview scroll image" as the search criteria.

Found the following old Infranview link:

Post #3 may prove directly helpful.

If not, then do some additional research using specific search criteria applicable to the problem as you see it.

No, it will skip to the next image that isn't AVIF. Like if I have 3 AVIFs in sequence it will skip all of them and move to the next .jpeg or whatever the next non-AVIF image is.

No, that one seems to be about whether the scrolling action causes zooming or whether it causes a move to the next file.

Okay - try another approach.

Open the Command Prompt.

Go to the folder where the image files (mixed file types including .avif - correct?) in question are stored.

Use the attrib command to look at the files in the folder.

And specifically for any differences between the image files that do appear and those (.avif) that do not appear.

FYI (and you can google for additional explanations and tutorials as necessary):

You do not want to make any changes. Objective being to simply determine if there is some difference between the .avif files and the other image files.

I just tested an AVIF file in my IrfanView and it can't open it either(Decoder error) . A couple of other picture viewers weren't able either!

Some search on the internet shows that AVIF files can be opened in many browsers (Firefox, for example).

But you can convert those files to other formats that IrfanView can open.

Convertio is a good website for that, no need to install anything..

This just gave me a list of all the files in the folder. But, bear in mind, there's definitely nothing wrong with the AVIF files. If I double click them, Irfanview will open them no problem (so will Paint). It's just that when I'm scrolling through pictures from inside Irfanview it will skip the files.

I think this is an Irfanview problem, rather than a problem with the files.

I have no problem opening them with Irfanview. You need to install a codec for Windows and then an add-on for Irfanview called tools.dll (I think more recent versions of Irfanview have it natively).

Although I had the latest version (and it wouldn't open the AVIF files), I did install the plugins from IrfanView's website. That seems to have solved the problems

Thanks!

I think you are talking about the Open dialog.

What happens when you type in *.avif and press Enter while the Open dialog is open?

What happens when you change Files of type
to:
All files (*.*)
?

It just looks like AVIF hasn't been added to the file types recognized by the open dialog yet. Report it as suggested above. Maybe the author will fix it.
