is 1/2 core OK for low end workstation?

as i heard that only 1/2 cores we use in our daily work (sometimes even on a low end workstation too), what number of core actually we need?

Personalyl I have an old retro machine at home, with some older hardware. Such as the Core 2 duo e6300. It's not amazing at anything, but it does its job alright. Personally I believe that single core CPU's are pretty much dead, but that's just my opinion. For light work and browsing, 2 cores will suffice.
