Is 1080 at 60Hz obsolete? ... Which is more important today? Res or Refresh?

As described in the topic...

Lots of 1080P 60Hz monitors out there in all sizes.

Looking to upgrade some older mismatched ones, I've noticed that:
- Upping the resolution beyond 1080 tacks on a large cost
- Upping the refresh rate beyond 60 Hz tacks on a large cost
- Upping both tacks on an astronomical cost :)

If one were looking to upgrade, which would be most important?

And -- is it silly to buy a monitor without the higher res/rate? Is 1080P at 60Hz a "bad buy" based on obsolescence?

Solution
It's not obsolete, far from it, it is the most common mainstream type and will be for some time in 22-24 inch monitors. If your going higher than 1080 then you want to look at upping to 27"+. Which is more important, screen resolution or high fps, is a personal preference. Do you prefer high image quality, or extreme fluid motion? Also, do you have the graphics horsepower to support either? For 60fps+ its not only gpu power but cpu power too, think skylake i5 or better to maintain above 60fps in demanding titles. For greater than 1080p you need to be looking at 4gb+ graphics cards with gtx980 or 390x or preferably more to get good performance.
Depends on what you use your PC for and if gaming what type of games do you play. There is also personal preference of resolution v Hz

1080p @ 60Hz is not obsolete, I haven't got any figures but I strongly suspect it's the most common setup. As you have noticed going up in either adds cost and you need to be a bit more hardcore than your average gamer to want to pay for it

there is no such thing as silly since it basically boils down to what is worth it for you and how much are you willing to pay for... even if anyone suggest to you "you should upgrade to XXX monitor because XXX reasons" but don't have the budget nor willing to pay for it its useless... best suggestion would be for you to go to a actual store with monitors and have a look around to which one suits your budget and preferences

there is no such thing. if i'm not wrong, more than 50% of users on steam are below 1080p.
As for what is more important these days, resolution or HZ, I would say neither. Adaptive Sync(G-Sync/FreeSync) is. 😉

The best combination today is 2560x1440 144/165Hz IPS/VA with GSync/FreeSync....at at relatively astronomical cost...

Bad buy: 60Hz TN 1080p
Mainstream: 60Hz IPS/VA 1080p or 120/144Hz TN 1080p
Upper class: 60Hz IPS/VA 1440p or 144Hz TN 1440p
Pure luxury: 1440p 144/165Hz IPS/VA

I leave 4k out at the moment since you need too serious investment on your rig.

Any particular recommendations in the "mainstream" category? Perhaps in the $150ish range?

Yeah It's all about preference. Best to worst will differ by preference. 144Hz can be unbelievably satisfying, but you might want better/deeper colors instead. Who knows.

I personally think that 1080p will still be around for a very very very long time. They way you say it seems like you're putting 720p and 1080p on the same boat. Nowadays 1080p has become a no brainer and will still be the staple when it comes to resolution preference for many many years to come. 1440p and 4k are nice but personally when I look at 1080 vs the higher resolutions, it doesn't have that "must have this now!!" kind of feeling when it comes to higher than 1080p.

if you do a lot of FPS then refresh

if you're a graphics whore then go resolution.

true... higher resolutions isn't for everyone because not everyone can see the same amount of detail but if you have the money hey who I am to say otherwise :) the same goes with FPS since some people (yes these kind of people exist) can't differentiate 60 fps from a 120 fps 🙁

Yeah, I'm one of those people who doesn't like FPS dropping below 60fps at least. Even tho there isn't much diff bet 60 fps vs 60+ fps, I just like that safe FPS range.

30-40fps on 1440p? It will feel like my system is already old, and I tend to upgrade much faster. lol.

It will wow anyone as long as you're using a graphics card that can reach 144hz. The reality is if your vid card is not capable enough or can only or barely reach 60 fps, what's the point?

I've got 2x Asus 24" 1080p 60Hz monitors pushed by a gtx970. Don't have a single issue maxing any game I play, even with some using 4k rendering. So would a 144Hz monitor be an improvement? Probably not, since CS:GO is the only game that'll hit 300fps. Everything else runs 90-100 avg, with 60+minimums. So, 1440p. With a 27", maybe. But it would mean lowering the detail settings on most of the games or loose out on the fps in a big way. Honestly don't think a gtx970 (even with its maxed out OC) is a viable gpu at 1440p for anything gpu intensive and ultra settings.

So. 60Hz, 1080p is where I'll stay, yes, they are the budget TN panels, until I'm rdy to move to 1440p and an appropriate gpu.

Frame timings. A lot of games stutter, but to a lot of people this isnt noticeable, to me it is though, Im the kind of guy that have to watch a blu ray in 24p mode.

Agreed, I think that 1080 TN should be buried. TNand IPS are slowing down display picture quality, I really dont understand how people are buying TNs today unless its a cheap 144 Hz.
