i've always used 1080p displays but is 1440p worth it. Is image quality really that much better

Specs: i7 7700k
gtx 1080ti
32gb ram

With these specs the rig can handle games at 1440p

I recently switched from a 1080p 60hz display to a 1440p 144hz display. The largest difference I noticed was the higher refresh rate, but the extra pixels were also noticeable and nice to have.

Yes that system is great for 1440p. If you are willing to spend the money on a 1080 ti and 7700k then I think a good 1440p monitor is worth it so you can take full advantage of your hardware, it would go to waste at say 1080p 60hz. A 1060 can max most games at 1080p 60fps.

As Dunlop says, it will require a good bit more computer to do, but I believe like him, that's it's well worth it.
I have 2 1440 displays going right now, the one I game on is an Overlord Tempest(no longer available, 27" 1440 set at 60hz factory but overclockable, mine is currently going at 96hz, but will run 120hz fine), my other display is a Dell 34" widescreen 1440(beautiful display).
I think the big thing is that 1440 displays can be much larger and still have the right pixel look. 24" displays now seem tiny to me, maybe that's good, maybe not....
