I currently have a 770 with 4gb of vram. I'm using a 1440p monitor with it. I'm looking to buy an ultrawide 1440p in the near future and am wondering if the 3gb of vram in the 980 will be enough for awhile or if I should just wait and see what the future holds. Thanks!

Also I would be most likely using the 980 in SLI eventually

it should be fine for most games at 1440p, more than playable frames im sure. In some super demanding games you might have to lower some settings, maybe sacrifice AA or something, that or lower settings to medium or something. the 980 is a very powerful card, I wouldnt worry. at any higher resolution though i would worry a bit.

3gb of vram will work just fine you shouldnt have any issues with gaming or anything but of course 4 is even better really a personal choice with 4 though you always have that extra gig and have less things to worry about so either will work just a personal choice

3GB is the minimum for highest settings in Watch Dogs or Skyrim with mods.
You needn't worry though because the GTX 980 has 4GB of VRAM. You may be thinking of the GTX 780 with 3GB.

Your new resolution would have a fairly small impact on VRAM usage.
On your existing card, it would have an impact on frame rates (about 75% of current frame rates).
There is an increase in pixels of 34% and the GTX 980 is about 50% faster than the GTX 770, so you should see an increase in framerate with the new card and monitor.
