I’m on a tight budget with my pc build and for my cpu I am planning to go with the ryzen 3 3300x, which has 4 cores 8 threads. Is that enough for modern AAA games, or do I need more? I’m not going to be streaming anything but will be playing fairly intensive games like battlefield 5/6 and red dead redemption 2

Would it be ideal? Probably not. Six core seems to be the new game standard.

With that said, if you choose a good motherboard with decent VRM you will have a really decent upgrade path in R5/7/9 of the 3xxx and 5xxx generations.

most games moved to 6 cores, battlefield is one of such case, if you plan to multiplayer, 4 core might be dipping below 60fps
