is 40-45 degree celsius a good or bad temp for my cpu?

i dont know which thermal paste or grease i use but i think its a normal one and is pre-applied, my cpu is a bit old but i feel its ok, it is a intel pentium dual-core 2.80 ghz, and a asus P5QPL-AM motherboard and i use the same old windows xp, with about 2 gb ram(1918 mb usable). i want to know if 40-45C is good or bad temp for my pc, if yes what should i do. yes,my room temp is hot cause i live in india .

Most accurate one is the reading in your BIOS. Sometimes softwares are erroneous

well before buying i want to ask.............. the speccy software i got shows that my computer temp is like 60C but when i use the asus pc probe it just shows about 45 or 50..... which one is correct? i state the asus pc probe correct but i want to be sure....

They are probably both "accurate" insofar as the sensors that they read are accurate, but they are both almost certainly reading different sensors. There are two different places from which to read temperatures on modern Intel CPUs: The "case" temperature is taken from a sensor below and in the middle of the CPU cores, and the individual core temperatures are taken from a digital thermal sensor (DTS) within each core. The core temperatures should always be higher unless the sensors' accuracy is particularly bad. Core temperatures are arguably more important despite Intel not officially supporting the DTS as a means for reading temperatures (and for good reason, at least on Core 2 CPUs).

well now i applied some heat sink compound not much difference first it was like 45C at idle now its 42C at normal 10 mins idle.......... so do u guys think it is ok to drop about 3C cause at load or watching movies it gets to like 52C!!! or if it is a high quality movie it gets to 56C!! so is it ok??

nowadays whenever i see the temps they are normally 40-42C. I stress tested it and went to 60C is that ok?........at like 10 mins idle they are like 38C, so i am pretty happy.....well right now its stuck at 40C at like 10% load, so is it ok?

Nothing to worry, 25 to 80 celsius is normal.

81 to 90 its overheated and at 100 celsius it will shutdown to prevent from getting higher than that.

50 to 60 celsius is very normal. 30 to 40 celsius is normal.

the computer needs to be warm, not too cold or too hot.

My new AMD FX-8350 8 Core processor according to the BIOS reading after running on idle in the BIOS on the GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 motherboard reads between 45 to 46°C while not often peaking 47-48°C while in the BIOS. I am unsure how to test the cpu temp when it is loading other than using Core Temp when the OS is installed. This is also a fresh build so trying to figure out the basics or that temperature range that is normal.

That's not too hot for your circumstances, but just always make sure your fans are clean from dust and are working properly.

I think it's a late answer but i didnt had something to do right now xD
anyways my normal temp i saw is like 30-40 but sometime i saw its 38-47 like when running utorrent for example.
but in game holy shit! it goes like 60-77. and im quiet worried even i heard that some of u guys think its ok under 80....
i wonder if the dust clean is gonna improve without re-paste the compoud...

See if your fans inside your computer are free of dust, and most importantly, if your graphics card has a little fan, then clean that from dust as well, as these fans help to keep the temperature down ESPECIALLY the graphics card, which is the one that will get hot very quickly.

i notice no 1 has told him that the thermal grease can take up to a week to cure and then his temps should drop even more, suprised you lot didnt mention this

Good for you. Dust builds up fast on the fans, fins, filters, just spray them with compressed air next time

Thanks for that! Used compressed air through exhaust fins and intake mesh, idle temp difference of 4-5 degrees celsius. Lovely bubbly. Was avg. 53 >>>>> Now avg. 48 degrees.

I wonder if 48 is normal for my laptop or is it that time of the millennium to disassemble, paste up and clean the old ah heck thoroughly?
