Is 4GB good enough for a RX 480/RX 580?

On a tight budget here. WIll the 4GB be enough for at least 3 years?

If it is 4GB of RAM, for office, web browsing, and light gaming ( LoL, DOTA, CSGO,... ) then yes.
If it is 4GB of RAM, for AAA titles, then probably no.
If it is 4GB of VRAM, then it will last for at least 3 years.

You will need more if you like to open 10 windows at the same time.

One thing is true, if you're on a tight budget, all you can do is buy the best item possible that works for you today. On a tight budget worrying about the next 2 or 3 years is a luxury you can't afford.

All 'future proofing' is amounts to buying more than what you need now so that it lasts longer. If you can buy more than you need now, you're not on a tight budget.

Is this for 1080p gaming? Most games still don't use more than 3gb at 1080p.

Rx480/580 is capable of using more than 4gb of vram in 1080p 60fps in some games. Of course, not every game will need more than 4, but lot of newer games are using better quality textures, which require more vram. If you can afford it, go with the 8gb variant.
