Hi,
I've got a pretty ancient computer running an Abit IS-7 and am wanting to get a sata backup hd which will also run in a new computer when I get it.
With my little knowledge of Sata will any drive work or do I need to be more specific in my searching? Any suggestions more than welcome 😉

Thanks

Some SATA 3.0 drives have a jumper so it will work on a SATA 150. Most drives a backwards compatiable. If you want you can get a WD Raptor, They are all SATA 150. but will work on new SATA 3.0.

This is from Wikipedia.

"According to the hard drive manufacturer Maxtor, motherboard host controllers using the VIA and SIS chipsets VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420, VT6421L, SIS760, SIS964 found on the ECS 755-A2 which was manufactured in 2003, do not support SATA II 300 drives. To address interoperability problems, the largest hard drive manufacturer Seagate/Maxtor have added a user-accessible jumper-switch known as the Force 150, to select between SATA-150 and SATA/300 operation[2]. Users with a SATA-150 motherboard with one of the listed chipsets should either buy an ordinary SATA-150 hard disk, buy a SATA-300 hard disk with the user-accessible jumper, or buy a PCI or PCI-E card to add full SATA II capability and compatibility."

So if you use The ICH5R, either SATA 150 or SATA 3.0 drives should work.

Thanks very much for quick reply. So just to make sure I've understood you; if I buy any seagate or maxtor drive it'll at least have the jumper you mentioned.
