Is 750ti a massive upgrade for me?

I am currently using a laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 2GB VRM.

I have built a desktop computer which is lacking a graphic card (currently running on Intel graphics using Haswell i5 CPU).

I always keep my graphics setting to the minimum and not into playing stuff on High/Ultra. The game I mostly play is final fantasy 14 (online mmo) and I get about 20 - 40 fps on low settings using that laptop.

If I were to upgrade my new desktop with the GTX 750TI, would it be a massive upgrade in comparison to that laptop graphic card? Or it doesn't make much difference or worse still is a downgrade?

I am on a tight budget thus not looking at 660/760 or higher. On low settings, all I am looking for is a stable minimum of 40 fps for final fantasy14 in the most crowded graphic intensive spots.

Please advice. If you have a better alternative with even better pricing would be nice too. Thank you.

I think you'll see a huge improvement. You could also look on eBay or somewhere for a used card. I'm thinking about throwing up an EVGA GTX 660 w ACX for $140.

The mobile GPUs are usually much weaker than desktop GPUs, even under the same branding/model. I would say that a GTX750Ti would be much better than a GT640M.

However, since FFXVI is a MMORPG, you may not get the FPS boost that you expect if you keep the same CPU. I see that you're using a Haswell i5, which definitely has enough processing power for a very decent FPS in an MMO. I would recommend that you try getting a discrete GPU.

FYI: the GTX 760 dropped in price by like $30 recently, check if it's still out of your price range.

If you're comparing it to a mobile chip, in the 640M, then yeah it's going to give your a better performance overall. I assume that with your desktop you'll be playing at 1080p most likely. Whereas with your laptop you're probably playing below that resolution, which automatically takes a lot of stress off the card. So a great span in performance might not be as near as some would suggest.

Now assuming you're Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics, your performance increase would actually be kind of substantial. To a degree. Games where you were able to play at 30FPS at low settings will now play at probably 45+. The 750TI typically plays most new titles at low-medium settings, which ironically is what decent integrated graphics do more often than not. You'll just see a noticeable frame rate increase with the 750TI

It'd be a worthwhile upgrade, and takes some stress off your system RAM

Hi, been watching 760 for months now, even earlier today. Always revolving around 170 pounds on amazon UK, don't see any dip.

On laptop I play on 1366 x 768 which I thought was is in the 1080p range.

1080p is 1920x1080

1366x768 is closer to 720p (1280x720) than 1080p

The release of the GTX 970 and GTX 980 should drop the prices of the GTX 760 very soon for you, it's already down to $219 on newegg

If you're looking to save money then a 750 Ti is a great choice. I play BF4 and others on High with a Core i5 as well. I can get away with Ultra but don't really need it.

I originally had a 7950 and the 750 Ti runs much much cooler and the drivers are better. I am now waiting for the 970 but have loved my 750 Ti.

Also, the 750 Ti is comparable to AMD's 7850.

You won't be disappointed.

you can likely find a good 750ti model for right at $100 in the next few weeks. in those moba games your playing, it will max them all out easily, probably even at 4k resolution. otherwise, it will play very demanding battlefield 4 @ 1080p on medium settings no problem.

at any rate, most these games run at 60fps on even the lowest tier discrete gpu.
