Hi, so I was originally going to get the rx 6800 xt xfx merx 319 but it is out of stock and I saw that the rx 6900xt xfx 319 was only 100$ more so I am thinking of getting it. But, I saw that the minimum psu requirement is 850w and I only have a 750w psu, so I am not sure if I should get it. Keep in mind I will be using for 1080p high refresh rate.

PC Specs:
Ryzen 5 5600x
Corsair H100i pro xt liquid AIO
2x8gb ddr4 3600mhz c16 ram
Asus Strix b550-f gaming motherboard
250gb M.2
1tb sata ssd
6 120mm case fans
750w corsair RMX psu

While you may be fine with the combo, why take the risk? Failure of the PSU could lead to catastrophic consequences for your overall system.

High-end GPUs are very demanding in terms of power. Better to have more PSU than you need, than less.

A 6900XT is overkill for a 1080p monitor, keep in mind your FPS will be limited by your processor.

From what I see the rx 6900 xt draws only a few more watts than the rx 6800 xt which was what I was planning on getting

Don’t necessarily blame you for wanting the faster card. As far as wattage, do what you want but as someone who’s damaged a motherboard due to a power supply, you need to get the correct power supply for your card.

Think of this discussion in this fashion. You are talking about potentially damaging a 700 dollar card over a 100-150 dollar power supply. Think about it for a second. Quite a bit of money on the card to take a chance on, and if power supplies go out, they have potential to kill other parts. Not saying it won’t work but better safe than sorry.

At my local microcenter for example a 1000 watt Corsair unit is about 140. I think an 850 is 120. At that I’d consider picking up the 1000 watt. Also you may hold off. They should be announcing new gpus next week. So as those come out they may have one you want off the new line or the 6900xt may drop further.

Keep in mind too, at this time a 6900xt is massive overkill for 1080p. It’s at least a 1440p, probably more like 4K though.
There is no overkill in graphics cards imo. 6900xt barely gets above 60 fps in cyberpunk 1080p all high no fsr, let alone high fps games where the target might be 240 or 360 fps.

Back to the main question , short answer , buy a 850 or better 1000w psu from good brand. Forget about 750, amd recommends 850 for a reason. Sell that 750 to recover some money.

Sure, but I was wondering what you are using with your rig now.
Well currently nothing, I recently got the rx 6800 xt but returned it due to coil whine and at the time I had a 650w psu so I thought that was causing the issue so I returned the card and got a new psu just trying to figure out if the rx 6900 xt would be worth the risk. It seems as though it is not so I will just stick with getting the 6800 xt xfx merc 319.

I have a 6900XT in my main gaming rig and can hardly make it sweat at 4K. For 1080p, it would be massive overkill and you would see no difference between it and the 6800XT from a user perspective. Save a few sheckles and go with the 6800XT.

Where are you buying from? An on-line or local source (like a Micro Center)?

Unfortunately I do not live near a micro center or else I would buy from there but probably newegg or bestbuy if it is in stock not amazon though, I have had bad experience with them like not sending me my part and trying not to refund me.

Just for future reference, you can buy CPUs and GPUs directly from AMD: https://www.amd.com/en/direct-buy/us

Saw these as in stock this morning:

https://www.newegg.com/asrock-radeo...814930049?Item=N82E16814930049&quicklink=true

https://www.newegg.com/sapphire-rad...814202405?Item=N82E16814202405&quicklink=true

I do not buy from (nor recommend) 3rd party sellers from Newegg or Amazon for high end components. The Asrock is a much better deal in terms of cost, the 800W PSU recommendation it carries is above the AMD recommended requirement.

I would love to buy from AMD but they no longer sell the rx 6800 xt. And also thank you for these links I think ill get the sapphire.
