Is 90C to hot for a new Power Color 7870 Myst

I just finished a build using a Power Color 7870 Myst edition (Tahiti LE). After a hour or so of gaming I downloaded MSI afterburner and started seeing temps reach 90-91c steadily while gaming. First temp reading was during crysis 3 which is a pretty demanding game so I tried some stuff a little less graphically demanding and still hovering around 85- 90c. It idles at 34c-35c so more than a 55 degree jump seems like allot to me but I far from an expert. Aside from being nervous it's going to fry itself or put unnecessary heat into the case, the high temps cause the fan to run at 100% which gets to be quite annoying after a while. I was just curious because I read a benchmark where they OC'd the same GPU quite high (I'm running stock for obvious reasons for now) and was running at 65c and the fan never got over 60%. Only had it out of box 3 days and no dust built up.

What case do you have and what does your fan setup look like?

The case had 3 fans there is only 1 more spot for a fan on top of the case. It was my first build so I didn't know what to look for I just saw cool lights and a 3 way digital temp display. It has 1 120mm fan in the front, 1 120mm rear fan and 1 120mm side fan blowing on the GPU/CPU. This case doesn't have great cable management so I have my 4 pin power and a few really small case wire crossing through the middle of the case but I did my best to keep them out of the way

I guess the short answer would be is 90c normal or healthy for a newer GPU

I have the same gpu, but mine idles at around 26-27 C, so your room is probably a little hot. That aside, 90c is a little high, but it's fine as long as it doesn't get higher than that.

It's too hot, probably need to use a different GPU cooler. Something like 2 fans cooler.

I don't think that there is any situation in which 90C is acceptable for a GPU temp for that card. It should at worst be in the 70s or low 80s.

Thats what I figured. Could it be a problem with the card or something I did. Since I had it only a short time I was thinking about returning it and using that credit plus another $100 to get a better card like a xfx 7950 3gb or a twin frozer 7950 3 gb. They also come with crysis 3 and tomb raider now and only $50 more so would it be worth it?

It would be worth it IMO, even if just to get a card that is less likely to burn.

You should try tuning the fans from Afterburner a bit higher manually. I'd advise against letting your card run above 85C.

OP says that the cooling is already going at 100%.

Then I'd check whether the displayed fan speed or temperature reading are incorrect.

That's a good idea. Given that OP said that the fans are extremely loud, I'll think under the assumption that they're already at or near 100%. As for temps, trying a few other programs such as SpeedFan could be helpful to get more *opinions* on what the temps are.

Feeling the graphics card's heat sink to see if it's burning hot is also a good measure, lol.

Yeah I checked with MSI Afterburner and I have a digital temp read out built into my case and they both are within 1 degree of each other. My screen has been "freezing or lagging" for about 1/2 second at a time and I'm getting a crackle in the backround of audio about every 1 or 2 seconds. Sounds almost like when you play an old record and it has the static noise in the backround. I'm hooked up through HDMI so my audio and video are coming out of it. Not sure what it is though.

I ended up having to RMA my Power Color 7870 Myst and got a Gigabyte 7950 3gb Windforce 3. It came with Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinte. That whole lagging thing went away as soon as I switched cards so I'm assuming it was the old GPU

Hey, it may be old school, but there aren't any computer software reading bugs when it comes to seeing if the heatsink melts a little skin on contact 😉

Haha. Thats also how I check to see if my oven is warmed up, just grab the oven rack and if you loose some skin go ahead and pop dinner right in

My oven is heated by a very visible electric bar, so I can tell when it's hot by how bright it glows XD

I try save my skin for when there aren't easy alternatives such as checking electronics heatsinks and/or heaters.

I have myst also, and I clocked it to 1,200 MHz and GDDR5-6400 using afterburner. I got 75c and yes my room is so hot like 30c+.

Your card is possibly defective. I live inside an oven because it's Philppines.
