[SOLVED] Is a 1070 ok with an i9-9900k?

So a good friend has decided (he thinks) that the CPU for him is the above one. His use is primarily video editing (premiere Pro); he also does some gaming. His need is not necessarily rendering (waiting for it to finish is ok), but he cares that live edits are smooth (he works mostly in 1080p, but occasionally does 4k). I believe that the Intel CPUs do a better job on this specific funtion than AMD per Puget Systems and others test reports.

Anyway, his current GPU is a EVGA GTX 1070. I am no expert, but I informed him that the 9900k is way more powerful than the 1070, and he may need to upgrade that out as well. I think that what Premiere Pro functions (live stuff) he want to improve are GPU-bound.....

Am I wrong? What GPU would be a good fit? I suggested that perhaps an i7-8700K may be a better CPU....am I wrong?

Well it depens what he does.

I've got 7700k and gtx 1080. I play demading fps games and do photo and video editing.

Playback and editing is as smooth is it can get for every material under 8K RED RAW.

For exporting/rendering a heavily color graded material my CPU is at 100% and GPU is somewhere between 20-30% usage.

It depends on his use case. If he has a 4k monitor that he's going game on via triple A titles, then yes he'll need to upgrade his graphics card. However if he only has a 1080p 60hz panel, the gtx 1070 will be plenty.

Thanks for the reply; your gpu is a higher performing one that his and your cpu would be less performing than his. Can I assume you use Premiere Pro? If so is it your experience that the playback function (I know less than nothing about video editing) is more cpu or gpu dependant? As I noted above, from a few videos and analysis by Puget Systems, it seemed that the playback function is favored by Intel CPUs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You dont need a 9900k unless you are streaming, gaming and multitasking a lot and game on 1440p at least, for 1080p even a i5-9600k should be more than fine.

The 1070 is still a great graphics card for that resolution/refresh rate. My suggestion would be to upgrade the monitor and the graphics card at the same time, in the future when the gtx 1070 needs to be upgraded. If he wants to spend the money on an i9 9900k and he's using it for video editing, then i'd say it is not overkill because video editing uses a lot of CPU horse power. Just make sure you have a high quality cpu cooler for that beast.

For his gaming needs the GTX 1070 is fine. The CPU is fast enough, so there is no issues there. Having a CPU that is better than needed for the games you play is not a hindrance.

For his video editing, I have no idea on what is needed. Look at the benchmarks. From the sound of it, this is what the CPU is for, and the GPU doesn't really matter for him. Whether it is worth it, depends on his budget and the benefits he gains.
