Is a 1080ti worth using for 1080p 144hz gaming

My buddy received a ROG STRIX 1080ti from his work that he was going to give me but I'm worried it would be basically a waste for what I'm gaming on display wise. This is my current setup I'm rocking right now and with me being on 1080p instead of 2k or 4k...its just overkill but I'm not sure...any help or info would be great!

Right now I have the ASUS VG248QE 24" Full HD 1920x1080 144Hz 1ms HDMI Gaming Monitor

Cpu is an Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor

Current GPU I have is a ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG STRIX OC Edition Graphic Card STRIX-GTX1070-O8G-GAMING

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDUVJ1I/?tag=pcpapi-20

Finally my motherboard is an Asus MAXIMUS IX HERO

Solution
Well if its free then what we even doing talking about it. Take it and used it. Like others have said, its better to have more then you need then not enough.

For 1080p 144Hz gaming, generally speaking, it's probably a bit overkill.

BUT, it depends on the titles you play. For games like CS:GO etc, it's probably a waste. If you want to push high framerates on more graphically intensive titles at Ultra though, it wouldn't be a *bad* thing at all.

More often than not, you're likely to not be utilizing 100% of the GPUs available horsepower at 1080p, but would allow you to make the step up in resolution in future should you wish.

I have the 1080 ti and the VG248QE and I'll say it's not overkill as there are some titles that can push that card pretty well but that being said going to a ultra wide or higher res in the near future wouldn't be a bad idea. And if you do make that step up to 4K it does game quite well on a mix of Ultra/high settings at 60hz.

Okay because it looks like a real good monitor but still wasnt sure because it's still 1920 by 1080

I'm on the side of overkill. I game on 144 with a 1070 (not even TI version) and I have zero issues. I play Arma3 on max settings (including max distance draw for sniping reasons) and get anywhere from 90-144 fps depending on my location and server.

I also use gsync.

The extra cost to get a 1080 at this time I don't think its worth it at all.

OK Well I wasn't too sure on how it would do overall with my current display setup but yeah I think I'm gonna try to pick this bitch up after work today and see what happens haha

 wait, this was a "should I take a free 1080TI" discussion?

Sorry, I'd assumed your friend was at least going to charge you something for it....
They know it's a $900-$1000+ card today...right?

I'd agree with Wildcard though (depending on the titles you play) that a 1440p/165Hz/GSync monitor would be a much nicer pairing.

Hmmm, I wonder where I could find a friend who would gift me a 1080TI

Hahaha no shit I mean I was gonna take it regardless...and yes he knows...he already has one and he gets them from work.. when they can't re sell them he takes them if it's ok with his boss I guess haha...but that monitor the other OP posted about is a good one to go too for a ti then...haven't done too much research on acer's

I would definitely take it. Actual performance would depend on the game, but there are some that even a 1080TI isn't quite 100% enough with that system:

-- Far Cry 5 (https://www.techspot.com/article/1600-far-cry-5-benchmarks/): the 1080TI was tops in performance, but still couldn't hit 144FPS average performance, let alone minimum (111 FPS min/131 FPS average).
-- PUBG (https://www.techspot.com/article/1551-pubg-graphics-benchmarks/): even worse, 68 FPS min/110FPS average at 1080p/Ultra.
-- DiRT 4 (https://www.techspot.com/review/1425-dirt-4-performance/): falls somewhere between the Far Cry 5 & PUBG performance
-- For Honor (https://www.techspot.com/review/1333-for-honor-benchmarks/): similar to DiRT 4
-- Mass Effect: Andromeda (https://www.techspot.com/review/1358-mass-effect-andromeda-benchmarks/page2.html): similar to Far Cry 5's performance.

There were plenty of other games where it's a little overpowered -- Fortnite, Destiny 2, BF1, etc. -- but you might find situations where you'll appreciate the horsepower.

With a 1080TI? OK, sounds like it's starting to become a thing with AAA titles that even a 1080TI might not always be enough...or that players' expectations may be too high...
