Is a 144hz monitor overkill with an RX 480?

I'm proboly going to get an RX 480/500 series in the future with an Intel core i5-7600k. I was wondering is there any point getting a 144hz monitor if I'm not going to be constantly hitting 144 FPS on 1080p ultra?. Could someone please explain this situation to me as I'm a bit of a noob thanks :)

The difference is that 120 and 144 Hz monitors support a high framerate output by your GPU. So say your GPU produces 80FPS you will be able to see all of the frames on a 120 or 144Hz (Hz means images per second) monitor. But on a 60Hz monitor you would waste 20 frames because the refresh rate of the monitor is too slow to show them.

A fast 120/144Hz monitor will display new frames more frequently and faster than a 60Hz; thus, it greatly reduces the chances of the screen not accurately displaying what you are actually aiming at in the game. In short, a high refresh rate in modern games, especially first person shooters (i.e. CSGO) reduces screen tearing. This is a good advantage in online competitive games.

But is it overkill? No...
No, having a 144hz monitor is great whether you're always hitting 144fps or not. Think of it this way, the graphics card supplies a frame and the monitor "grabs" the frame and displays it to you. If you're running a 144hz monitor and only getting 72fps, then half the time the monitor asks for a new frame, the GPU won't have one. However, you're still seeing 72 new images per second, as opposed to 60 on a 60Hz panel. If you play games like CSGO, then 144hz is an absolute must, otherwise it's just nice to have. For what it's worth, I'd turn down a couple settings (AA, Ambient Occlusion, shadows maybe) so that you can have 100fps+ as often as possible, but it's up to you.

But is it overkill? No, it's a standard now. 60hz is entry-level at 1080p. 120-144 hz is competitive/pro level. anything higher is enthusiast/future-proof. When something is "overkill", the value is negated and you're spending a premium at a higher expense.
