Question Is a 4790k a bottle neck?

Hello, i've had my system with the 4790k and two 980ti's for a while but was looking to upgrade the system for gaming since sli is obsolete. would getting a gpu such as a 2080ti be bottled necked by my 4790k? Many thanks

A bottleneck depends on many things but a big factor is what resolution is you monitor?

at 1080p high refresh rate it would be a bottleneck but for higher resolutions, it wont be much. (1440p or 4k for example).

Im running a 1440p monitor with 165hz refresh rate. Also because its a z97 platform i have ddr3 ram (32gb) would that be a bottle neck. It runs at 1866mhz but if i try to raise it higher my system crashes.

well I was playing games that were very easy to run such as LOL but I just played the modern warfare beta and was hovering around 70 fps on max settings. I like to have the nicest visuals while playing but it seems games don't support sli anymore so the other 980ti is useless

the 4790k is still a fast processor its no slouch, for 1440p 165hz the 2080 Ti should do nicely.

I’d expect it to do well at 1440p. You would see higher FPS in many newer games with a modern high end cpu but that does not make your combo bad, just not the best.

just done a 3d mark time spy benchmark and noticed that my cpu goes to 100 degrees, ive noticed that years ago my cpu ran on the hotter side but 100 is too much on a h100i cooler

What speed are you running the 4790k at? The 4790k is a great processor, but gets very hot as well. Still, it shouldn't be hitting 100 under load, at which point it will start throttling.

probably bad cpu cooler mounting, dried up thermal paste. which cooler do you have and did you OC your cpu? if in stock you are reaching 100c then its a cooler problem/mounting problem.

I have not overclocked it but it boosted up to 4.4ghz from what I see. I've tried in the past to change the thermal paste but it gives the same results and I have made sure that the h100i corsair cooler is making good contact with the cpu. If i take off the cooler i can see that the paste has been spread evenly and should indicate that there was good contact. It might be the cooler itself I spouse since i have never tired another cooler.

Which cooling mode are you using? The h100 should be getting pretty loud if it lets a 4790k to get that hot. You also might want to consider using an app like CPUID HWMonitor to confirm the temp numbers you are getting are accurate.

The 4790K, even at hefty overclocks, still sometimes tanks in minimum FPS in newer games due to being thread limited in newer games' (BF1, BF5) multiplayer action sequences...; given the most powerful GPUs at less than 4k, the CPU might very well struggle to keep up

(IMO, It'd be hard to fathom or recommend sinking $1200-1300 on a single GPU without debating instead going to 'only' a 2070 Super , 2080, or 5700XT and a 9900K/Z390/DDR4 combo..; you might still have enough money left for a 2 TB Intel 660P)

Well, I don't believe it's the entire issue, but you need to change the fan profile of your h100i. The fans should be running at the full 2700 RPM if your CPU is hitting throttle temp, not snoozing at 1500 (assuming you have it wired that way).

hwinfo64 is a better app to use.

at stock a cpu shouldnt reach 100c, and the h100i is a good CLC so its weird to get that high in temps under stock settings. you sure you read it right? try using HWinfo64 and run sensors only. and run any benchmark and see what max temps you get.
