Is a corsair h60 enough for a fx-8350 5ghz overclock?

I have a 6300 right now but am planning to get an 8350 and over clock to 5 GHz. Is the h60 sufficient? Corsair has refurbished ones for half price and I thought it seemed like a good deal. Thanks!

nope

get yourself a hyper evo 212, it will work better then the h60. and you probably won't get to 5ghz on a hyper evo 212 unless you land a golden chip. the fx8350 will hit 4.7 pretty consistently... 4.9 is not uncommon... going higher then 4.9 needs awesome cooling & a great motherboard/psu OR a golden cpu OR a combo of all 3.

My 8350 hit 4.7 on an Evo 212 and 5.1 on an H100i.

Newegg also has a sale on refurbished H100s. I just bought one to attempt to make a mount for my GPU.

got myself a refurbished h100 for $50 a few months ago. it's a pretty badass cpu cooler. far superior to that h60 you're looking at.

If you want 5Ghz or higher, my recommended coolers would be a NZXT Kraken x60, or H100i. But you'd have toi use Tuniq-4 or Arctic 5 thermal paste. As all chips and motherboards overclock differently-you may hit a worse chip or hotter running chip-or not. It's about luck, but if you want to definitely hit a 24/7 5ghz OC, then I'd recommend you go with a XPSC Raystorm 360 kit or gather your own components to create a Custom Loop. Otherwise, I doubt you'll be able to achieve such a high OC. (You can go Peltier if you study and are willing to invest in it-then you can probably get around 6+Ghz)

But if you aare willing to shell out 60 on a H60, I'd recommend you gather 15 more dollars and get a Noctua NH-D14 or Phanteks which performs just as well but with color options.

That all depends on your specific CPU and your motherboard. Some just overclock better than others.

Any specific motherboards that you would recommend for over clocking? I have an MSI 970a-46g right now and I heard that it's not very good for OCing so I was looking into getting a new one.

Any of the 990FX chipsets should be fine. I have the Asus Sabertooth R2.0 and it's been a great board. It's also certified to run the FX 9590 which is basically an 8350 overclocked to 5.0ghz (220W tdp). So the VRM and everything else is up to the task of running an FX at those speeds.

I recommend Sabertooth R2
GA-990FX-UD7
or Crosshair Formula-Z

And don't get the H100 ($105 over a Kraken x60 (110) or H100i (100))
A for better than H100-worse than the other 2-but cheaper-Noctua or Phanteks

Refurbished has alot different warranty standards-so if a pump failure or leak occurs, your pretty much SOL.

generally that's true. however corsair stands behind their hydro series with a lifetime warranty refurbished or not. I know someone who's h60 failed and leaked, starting a fire and killing his gpu, motherboard, cpu and psu. Corsair replaced his whole machine.

The warranty's on their hydro series cpu coolers is no joke.

Mine was "refurbished" only in the sense it was returned to corsair to get a new bracket for the LGA 2011 motherboard socket. The cooler itself was never touched or even taken out of its original wrapping. i got an extra discount because the box was opened by the store and the amd mounting hardware was removed from the box. i purchased the unit for $50 after tax even though i had an AMD cpu to cool. corsair sent me the new mounting hardware, no questions asked no charge to me, had it in less then a week.

this h100 has worked flawlessly for me, from my own experiences working with that company over the years, i would buy another "refurbished" cooler from them in a heartbeat.

No he said it was a reburb and also being a refurb someone opened it in the store and took the bracket out. Buying it from the store, as you have posted, means he gets the 5 year warranty. Non transferable means customer to customer won't transfer over but anytime you buy it from a dealer then you get the new warranty because they got it from corsair and corsair was able to test it to see if it passed. When you get it from another joe shmo then it doesn't go through testing and anything can be wrong with it. If you already know that info then I'm not sure what you're getting at then but the corsair customer service is known to be some of the nicest and customer friendly you'll ever experience.

I support buying the h100 as its about 50% off and a 212 or any of those blocks listed are only 15 bucks cheaper and don't perform as well and on top of that those coolers have been getting way too big lately with all that heavy copper in them mounted directly on your cpu any engineer would be nervous just looking at it. Too much stress. If you move your case it will crack something, or if you never touch your case it could still stretch with the heat and with time enough to not make a contact on the processor.

You probably won't get to 5000Mhz but mine is OC'd to 4306Mhz with the Hydro 60. Idle = 34c Load = 55c
