Is a Dell XPS I5 cpu an 1150 socket like any other I5?

I have an XPS system and I want to use the cpu in another machine. My concern is, is the socket different on the I5 because its a dell? How are the motherboards on the XPS? are they worth salvaging? Thanks

What model of computer are you referring to? In a dell desktop, all cpu sockets are the same as from the manufacturer of the processor, so it would be 1150 as if you had any other motherboard. As for the quality of Dell motherboards, they use OEM boards in most of their computers, so they aren't exceptional but they do the job. It's only worth salvaging if you find a use for it and can use the features attached to the computer.

No, all i5 sockets carry over from manufacturer to manufacturer, but different generations have different sockets, e.g. an i5 3570 uses socket 1155, while an i5 4670 uses the 1150. Some laptops have socketed CPUs, but others are soldered on the motherboard. I would recommend looking at a disassembly video for your particular system, or read the service manual. Weather or not the MB is worth salvaging depends on the year of the computer, and what you plan to do with it.

Ill have to get the model but I want to build a small powerful ITX machine. Could the mobo handle a 600w PSU?

even if it was the same socket you got to be sure dell's bios will support that chip and it may only support the chips in there cpu upgrade list for your model .. there funny that way
