The R9 3800X is now a little bit cheaper than the R7 3700X (UK Amazon prices) - also the 3900X has same FPS on games as the 3800X (from what I have seen on youtube compare vids!!!) & you get extra base clock when compared to 3700X.

If all you are going to do is gaming then save £100/$ & put that towards a PCi 4.0 X570 board to use all the features of a gen 3 ryzen.

The 3900X would only be better at rendering etc & getting high scores in benchmarks.

The XT range is out also with extra clocks to consider also if you are going to take a year or two, you may want to wait for prices to drop...

Their not going to be making games that require a 12 core/ 24 thread processor probably for a long time it's bad for business to put a game out that most of the people with a gaming PC can't play.

People are looking at the new PS and all the cores but that is a complete different platform and a core in one of them don't even come close to a PC core.

Depends on your budget and what software applications you want to run.

I bought a 3900x because I use my PC for Color Correcting and Editing 4K video as it currently gives me a tiny edge over the 3700x in performance and is a bit more future proof for my use.

You could get the 3700x and throw the extra money at a better graphics card or other component that would give you a better performance boost than the extra cores.

I had the 3600 until a few weeks ago & now have the 3800X on a X570 board & can really see a big difference in performance.

Well let's take into factor maybe not now but in the future you would want to stream and if you want to stream you need those extra cores would come in handy and you know I think in the future that you know games are going to be eight core you know they can take advantage of that you know 16 threads but you know definitely a 12 core will last you a minimum 5 years you know unless you're really picky or you want to keep on upgrading for no reason the most important is the video card upgrade which I believe people should do once every 3 years 3 to 4 years like that.

3700X is plenty, IMO..........
+1 Where we see a difference between Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 3700X is in multi-thread performance and not single thread performance. In fact, there is very little loss of frame rates even when compared to a Ryzen 5. Now, once game developers find a way to make serious use of multi-threads, then the 3900X would definitely be the best option. But, we aren't there - not by a long shot - so save some money and get a better GPU. So yes a 3900X is kinda over-kill for gaming.
