Unfortunately, it does sound like you have an old WD Green in your system and these drive models are not really suited for demanding applications and gameplay. 🙁 I'd suggest you run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows and determine the health and SMART status of the drive.

If you want to improve your gaming experience and upgrade your storage, I'd suggest you consider getting a WD Black HDD instead. Moreover, these WD models come with a 5-year limited warranty that also gives some peace of mind.

We no longer have the WD Green drives as you know them. Now, we have consolidated the mainstream PC products to the WD Blue family brand where you can find HDDs in the 5,400 RPM class (previously known as WD Green) that are a great secondary storage solution, as well as 7,200 RPM-class HDDs that a solid storage solution for everyday computing.

Hope I was able to answer your questions. Keep me posted if you have more coming my way!

While those Green drives are slow, there is no reason why they shouldn't work. A slow drive would result in slower loading times but not crashes. You should run the suggested diagnostics, but your problem is most likely because of a hardware or software failure and not because you are using a slow drive.
