I am planning on switching from my i7 7700K and an MSI Z270A Pro TO an i7 9700K and a ROG Z390e Gaming motherboard.
Is a windows reinstallation necessary or will the boot SSD be fine to plug back in?

I may also plan to upgrade to an nvme as my boot drive but not sure what to do with the SSD that is currently my boot drive.
I still want to use it in my rig obviously, but how do I go upon turning it into a regular drive?
Can I do so while still keeping the storage inside or will I have to wipe the drive?

Solution
Switching platforms like this, and the old OS, there are 3 possibilities.
  1. It boots up just fine
  2. It fails completely
  3. It boots up, but you're chasing issues for weeks/months.
I've seen all three.

A clea isntall is strongly recomended, often/usually required.
And going to a new drive? Yes...a clean install on the NVMe.

For the old drie, it is also strongly recommended to just copy off any data you wish to keep, and then wipe the drive. Use as desired.
Personal data, not the applications on it.
