Hi!

Pretty complicated problem i got here...

I game on a 4790k machine, but since i just upgraded my workstation after ten whole years I now have a spare 3930k machine which hopefully won't be necessary for rendering any more.

I can stay on the 4790k for higher clocks, or switch to 3930k for more cores . Or a third option, get an even slower clocked Xeon e5 2697 v2 (for 100$) which has 12c/24threads (which i think I will be able to use on my x79 board (that i have 3930k on)

I have to mention that i game at 1080p 60hz with gsync , i dont aim anything higher than 70fps.

I found very conflicting reviews and bechmarks and one of them was in spanish so i dont have a clear idea of how the xeon processor handle the gaming, so rendering benchmarks even state that is on a park par with the 4790k for rendering.

Do you think 12c24 threads will benefit since new consoles are 8c/16t and games will utilize that ?

The E5 -2697 V2 would be a downgrade in gaming. Very few games benefit from a lot of cores. Even then the downgrade in clock rate would hurt it to much on those select few games.

The 3930K may be a mild upgrade. Depending on how much you overclock it. There shouldn't be much difference between it and the 4790K on most games if both are overclocked. There could be some benefit on the few games optimized for 8+ threads. Although that'll depend a lot on the GPU you have. But I would expect drastic results.

I'd look into selling both of them and using the money for something newer.

Thank you, maybe i was not clear , i already upgraded the workstation to an AMD 5950x and now have two systems spare for gaming.

One of them is an 8 thread 4790k with good boost clock(4.4ghz) but i saw some tests indicating the 8+threads improving the "1% lows" so moving to the 3930k which has 12 threads but only 400mhz slower on clock.
The topic of this post was to even go further than replace the 3930k with a motherboard compatible Xeon cpu (the e5 2697v2)

So 24 threads wont matter as it will lack 1.3ghz clock speed difference.

ps: the gpu that i already have is a 980ti with a gsync display, cant spend much due to new workstation purchase)

also the xeon is being sold for 100$ local area.

so is e5 2697 v2 > 3930k for gaming at 1080p60?
