Heres the specs to my computer: VGC-RB30

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/specs/VGCRB30_mksp.pdf

It says "512MB PC-3200 400Mhz DDR"

I really think its time for an upgrade(eventually a new system altogether, but for now I just want to be able to run Windows 7), but I'm not sure what type of RAM to get, either DDR or DDR2.

It says on Wikipedia that my system can support DDR2 400/533(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets), but I want to double check with the experts before I spend 50 bucks on 2 gigs.

Solution
You need DDR 400 Ram for that MOBO - the chipset that the MOBO uses can be used on either MOBOs that support DDR or DDR2 but the MOBO you have only has DDR slots and the modules are different for each type and not interchangeable !!

Also you need to check and see if the MOBO supports dual sided modules (since it says it only supports 2GB MAX it may only support single sided modules so will not work with dual sided modules further limiting your choices !!)
