Is Acer a quality manufacturer or did I get a lemon?

Me and my dad went out and bought an Acer X163W last weekend and when we brought it home we were not happy at all with what we saw...

The thing only looked half decent when you looked at an extreme lower angle and otherwise looked severly washed out. The bottom end of the screen also had a lot of white bleed from the backlight.

We took it back to Walmart and did not even bother exchanging it and just got our money back instead.

Now I know that it is a bargin basement LCD but the specs would leave me to believe it should at least look better than my emachine LCD (which has lower specs) but this was not the case AT ALL.

So tell me, can they really look good or do you think I got a severly defective LCD screen?

You cannot rely on specs alone.

Generally speaking LCD panels generally suffers from color fading at extreme angles. This is especially true of LCD monitors using TN panels (some can also invert colors). The Acer you have uses a TN panel.

More expensive PVA/MVA panels also suffers from color fading at extreme angles, but not as much as those cheap TN panels

IPS panels are the most expensive and least used of LCD panel techs. Even less color fading at extreme angles than PVA/MVA panels. Generally considered to have the best color reproduction and preferred by graphic artists.

LCD monitors are not meant to be looked at extreme angles. Also less expensive monitors are more prone to backlight bleeding, but expensive LCD monitors can also suffer backlight bleeding, but to a lesser extent. Generally due to higher quality parts, namely the LCD panel itself.
