everyone i speak to says that the intel i cpu's are surperior in everyway to AMD but i can get an AMD fx 8 core black edition for nearly half the price of a mid ranged i5 is it worth sticking to intel or getting (on paper) much higher spec AMD cpu?

Solution
The current AMD CPUs are really far behind Intel in performance. The upcoming Zen architecture is supposed to make AMD competitive again, but it's still a month or two away.

That said, for the right workload, an 8-core FX CPU for half the price of a Core i5 can be a decent option. Just be aware that you get what you pay for. The Core i5 doesn't just cost more because of the nice blue sticker.

In most things an FX8xxx is out performed by an i3 6100. An FX8xxx needs a decent motherboard to avoid overheating VRM's and a decent cooler. The i3 will run on a cheap motherboard and stock cooler with no problem. When you look at total cost the i3 should be no more expensive if not cheaper.

The current AMD's also give no future upgrade path.
