Is an FX-6300 too weak for 4k?

I currently have and FX6300 on an Asus M5A97 R2.0 with an Asus R9 270X DirectCUII TOP and play at 1080p on max with pretty much every game i own.

4K is looking very nice and I want to get into the 4k game, especially since samsung released the u28d590 for £500 for gaming on. However I'm unsure if my FX6300 will be the limiting factor in my rig if I upgrade to an R9 290x and a better AM3+ board.

Anyone give me some advice? Would I need to get an 8 core AMD or make the hectic change to Intel?

Solution
An upgrade to your motherboard just to get an extra .1-.3 GHz will be a waste of money. Like I said earlier, the 6300 will not bottleneck a 290x. It's just more susceptible to frame drops than higher end Intel chips. The ASUS M5A97 will get you to 4.2-4.4 given a decent cooler. Buying a $150+ board just to get an extra maybe 1 FPS out of it is a waste of money.
the fx-6300 will bottleneck the r9-290x unless you overclock it to around 4.5GHz, but for 4k gaming the r9 290x won't give you 60fps at ultra settings in AAA games, just so you know. (you need the r9 295x2 for ultra 4k gaming).

That's what I said ... Getting a octo core amd cpu or a intel cpu is recommended
I know he won't get 60+ fps on ultra on 3xA games ...
that's basically what I said , i just didn't mention the graphics settings

The 6300 won't bottleneck the 290x at all. What it will do is be susceptible to more noticeable/more often frame rate drops.

But like the above have said, you'll want a more powerful system in general to run at 4k, unless you want to run at low/medium quality. And even going dual 290x/780 Ti, you'll be unbalanced with a 6300.

I started writing before you posted..............

Right so should I get a new motherboard? I was looking at the sabertooth or maximus for overclocking the 6300 with something like the h80i. I know that ultra isn't possible with the 290x for 60fps, however I'm fine with knocking details down to medium if I have to.

Ahh ok, thanks man! What would be a good amount of wattage to get on the power supply for the upgrade? And by which company? I'm currently running a cx500m from corsair

After looking at the table and checking pricing on amazon here's what I've come up with.
Tier 2a - Corsair CS750m - £78.99
Tier 2 - Corsair RM750 - £94.09 however on the chart it only lists the rm550...
Tier 1 - Corsair AX760 - £119.99

Which would be the one you'd recommend? I should be able to afford any of them but not yet.

I see. Thank you for the assistance, I'll be getting the ax760 and a h80i or custom full loop. undecided at the moment but hopefully the completed system will be epic
