Is an HDD Cage Needed?

Hey, I'm going to be building my first PC and I'm looking for a case that will fit the Gigabyte G1 GTX 970. They say it is 12.28 inches long. I found a case that would have enough room for the card IF the HDD cage was removed. What harm would it be to remove the HDD cages? ( I'm only going to be having one Hard Drive in the PC. )

what if you are going to be doing a ssd and hdd set up?

There is enough spaces on the bottom for 2 SSD's and I thing there is a small HDD cage under the removable one for 4+ HDDs at once. Check build photos for the case in www.pcpartspicker.com
