Hey guys, so right now I have a gtx 770 and an i3-2130. My question is will upgrading the cpu to an i5-2400 give me better performance in gaming and in everyday tasks and is it worth it? Or should I just go with a newer motherboard and get an i5-6400? Thanks in advance.

If you aren't bothered by your MBs connectivity, go for a second hand i7 2600 or 2600k. You'll be good for another 3 years atleast.

I want to play games mostly like h1z1 and rust. Im pretty sure you can choose how many cores you want to use for each game, and more cores equals better performance, right?

Also I want to do some recording with nvidia shadowplay, and sometimes when I record and things are rendering (for example buildings in a city) I experience lots of lag spikes. However when I am not recording, I generally have an ok performance.

One last thing I would like to mention is that I will be buying a used cpu so the price will be cheaper than usual.

more cores does not always mean better, if it did then the fx 6300 would beat a 4690k, single threaded performance has much more to do with games than more cores. however in most games you wont be able to tell a difference between lets say a i5 6600k or i7 6700k and yet in some games the i7 will pull ahead of the 6600k by a decent bit if that makes any sense.

Wanting to record is another reason to go for an i7 2600 k on non-k. Having 8 threads means there is room for the game and for the recording. And those chips a very reasonably priced these days.
