i have came upon an i5 4690k cpu and i am wondering if it will be compatible with my dinosaur of a motherboard

ASRock 990FX Extreme3 ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard

NO, the 990fx motherboards are only capable of supporting AM3 or AM3+ CPUs from AMD.
No Intel manufactured CPUs will work in that motherboard.
You could use an FX cpu in that motherboard, although the ASRock 990FX Extreme3 seems to be a very low-end 990FX board with only 4+1 phase VRM design not even capable of properly supporting a stock 8350. Keep in mind, some modern motherboards will have 8 or more VRM phases
I would recommend upgrading to a newer CPU, motherboard, and ram.
