Looking to get a faster SSD like the Intel Optane SSD 900P:

Is it compatible with my mobo:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97PRO/
and my processor is an Intel Core i7-4790 Haswell.

The part I'm not sure about: Is the PCIe 3.0 on the Z97Pro a "4x" slot like the Optane SDD requires?

I run lots of VMs concurrently, and need a boost over the Samsung850 evo sata ssd im using now.

Thanks!

What would be your use case for this?
I wouldn't count on that board being able to boot from it.

Optane, either the cache or the large PCIe drive...is still a nascent technology.

If budget SSDs had relegated hard drives to backup and archival use years ago, then the software landscape would probably be more ready to take advantage of the speed offered by the Optane SSD 900P. Instead, the Optane SSD as a consumer/prosumer product only makes sense in a few niches. Most users- even those with relatively intense storage performance needs - will be better served by high quality flash SSDs like the Samsung 960 PRO."
