I have a pc with a Nvidia MX420 and am going to upgrade. I have the following:
-P4@2.4ghz
-intel 845PE motherboard
-1,280mb ram

I was wondering if getting a X800 GTO card would be overkill for my system? and if it will bottle neck in my system?

Thx.

That would be a good card it would not be overkill actualy i think any currently AGP card, (even the 7800GS) wouldn't be overkill that should be a huge upgrade from what you had

I'll just repeat what Cleeve said. An X800GTO is the perfect upgrade for your PC. You couldn't make a wiser choice. It is not overkill, and it will not bottleneck your system; it is rather your actual MX420 which is bottlenecking your system.

One more repeat: an X800GTO would fit in there just fine, and is one of the few decently-priced AGP options left. It'd make your machine viable for even Oblivion.

wait so does only the 460 core able to have all 16 pipes? so the powecolor with 16 already open is 460?(dunno core names i think its 460 : ) that is pci express although. id think itd be hard to find a x850 core on an agp x800gto, even the x800's do very good in benches. Peace.

well, thanks for all of the input. I am going to buy the card off of newegg.com this weekend.

What is the problem with the R430 core? Cuz if it's the overclocking capabilities, I can't do that in my current pc because it's a retarded dell.

Thx. 8O 8O

If you get one with an R430 core....send it back.

GW - Don't just piss in everyone's cornflakes....

The R430 core is JUST FINE, I have one, unless you are trying to really really overclock the graphics card.

I can only get mine from 400/490 to about 420/520... so its not much of an overclock...

HOWEVER, my R430 core X800 GTO also is able to unlock the extra 4 pipes, something I haven't tried yet, because I am have been very happy thus far with gaming, the only exception being the heavy shaded Oblivion, but I've found a nice mix on that, and its been very playable!

My decision came down between the X800GTO and the 6800GS on the Nvidia side. I am glad of the one I have, but I've heard reports that each works better with certain games.

Half Life 2 looks great, no slowdown even with everything up...

But remember, I only play in 1024X768, its the best I like for my 17inch standard Compaq monitor...

My stats are below:

No, im not going to overclock it unless the software that comes with it allows me to. I am also running everything pretty much at the same res u are except on most of the games I have like Half Life 2 because the MX 420 is crap. My monitor is ancient also and I don't think it will handle anything over 1280x720 which is fine because it's only about 16 inches.....

So in that case I should be able to turn all the effects up high and set all the resolutions to 1024 res with the GTO. I can't wait....

NO.
Unless you are playing games like Quake 1.
I beleive San Andreas based on the old DX8 engine requires more power than the MX420 .

Six-twelve months will be a good time to get new everything based on your mobo and CPU.
