Short answer is : yes.
16gb of ram and GTX965M should be more than enough to roam fluidly through Maya, Mudbox, Memento or 3ds max.
I'd suggest you to get one with the internal SSD option. Install your OS and modelling programs on it.

Thank you! Is 2GB VRAM enough to run this stuff?

If by ''this stuff'' you mean modelling, then yes. The amount of VRAM will not affect your viewport performance much.
As mentionned before, if you eventually wish to do more rendering (either real time or pre-calculated) you might want to build yourself a real workstation in order to save time (and money) in the long run.

Thank you, that is helpful. I was trying to keep expenses down until I could afford a workstation, but time and money are related as you note. Thanks!

You will be saving money right now if you ditch the laptop and go for a entry level workstation. That laptop can be $3000, you get a nice workstation, upgradable in the future, plus nice big dual LCD screens, for that amount.
