The free version is annoying, I know that. Google some comparisons and see what the experts have to say. Trouble is anti virus software is constantly changing so only a review written very recently is of much use.
I cop a bit of flack for my personal anti virus setup. I use defender because it's free and came with windows 10. I add an occasional scan with malware bytes and eset nod32 free online scan tool just as an added layer of defense. Not the best tools to be found perhaps, but all 3 combined add up to $0 and give me pretty decent protection. Adding an add blocker and pop up blocker to your browser can help too.
Being smart in your browsing and Email habits is actually just as important, probably more so, than having a good anti virus. If you never click on links in emails or open attachments you are not sure of, close any websites that claim you are infected immediately, and treat everything with suspicion and scepticism before clicking on it, then you will be preventing a great deal of trouble before it ever gets to the anti virus.
