I,m thinking of getting a Seagate ST330620A 30 gig for my P3 550, Asus P3V4X, ASUS V7700 Deluxe. Would this be a good choice? Any compatibility problems? I,m looking for long life and decent performance.

Just when you think you know it all, someone asks a question.

The performance is not quite up to that of IBM or Western Digital's 7200 rpm drives, but if you want a quiet, reliable, and dependable drive with good performance (but not the best) then the Baracuda III would be the way to go.

Most have dynamic fluid bearing motors built in with smooth, quiet, and reliable operation in mind. They are the most mature and reliable fluid bearings around too. Seagate has one of the best reputations among the HD manufacturers as well. No known issues have surfaced yet that I am aware of, but maybe someone else has heard different.

Check out these two sites. These have good reviews and comparisons for almost all of the 'new' generation drives.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/ A very thorough comparison of the various HDDs including the Seagate Barracuda ATA III

http://www.storagereview.com/ Great reviews and in each review there are great comparisons with everything available

In short the Seagate is a good performer but not the best. Barracudas' transfer rates are always the highest though if I remember well.About noise or heat,I bought a Quantum Fireball Plus AS and it's almost dead quiet and working very cool. It's a heavy performer too...
