I'm looking to get cable with Telstra in Australia and I'm just trying to confirm as much as I can, does cable one installed, give a wireless connection just like Adsl does through a modem/router ? Because some of the computers in the household are not Ethernet compatible (laptops). As much info as you can provide is helpful, thanks!

The delivery of the Internet from your ISP (DSL of cable) is independent of how you distribute it around your home. The distribution is dependent on the equipment you have. Since you have a modem/router/WiFi combination now you will need to replicate that.

Ask you cable provider what specific equipment they supply with the connection. It may be as little as a modem that converts the cable signal to Ethernet. In which case you will need a router with WiFi. Today, many cable providers can supply the modem/router/WiFi combination. So just ask them.

Depending on how they charge, you may be able to get less expensive equipment on your own, but would also be on your own for set up and managing it. Management has challenges but is...

You would have to verify that the cable modem supplied by Telstra doubles as a wireless router. This would then give you the capability of transmitting your cable internet via a wireless connection, much like your previous ADSL service. It is not the type of connection that gives you this capability, it is the equipment given to you by your provider. Most modems provided these days (either by cable providers or DSL) double as a wireless router.
