Is calibration really necessary?

I own three ZR24w monitors and was thinking of getting a spyder3 pro calibrator... I typically do gaming and application usage (I'm no professional photographer or artist, so none of those apps).

So I was wondering, considering that information, is it worth for me to go out and get a hardware calibrator for $150?

Not for general use or gaming.

The best compromise I've seen was a computer brand which included a Pantone standard colour swotch card with its monitor and invited users to match this to an onscreen image of the same card just using the gamma control in the video card's utilities and/or the monitor's brightness and contrast settings.
