Is custom fan profile/speed nessecary?

I have MSI Afterburner with a custom fan speed for my R9 290 Tri-X and it stays at 50% Idle and goes from 60-70 something percent when playing a game. Are these fan profiles really nessecary? Will it hurt to turn them off because of my GPU getting hot or whatever? And what is the maximum safe temp for this card? Am I extending card life by doing this or am I wearing down the fans faster or what? I would like to be able to turn it off and be able to play without worry of GPU getting too hot but if It is safer or will make my card last longer then I will leave it on.

If your GPU reach high temperatures such as 80c or more (wich isn't your case) you better do a fan curve. If you get great temperatures and the noise level is reasonable you wouldn't have to touch this. TRI-X Coolers are very quiet, so I'd just leave it like that.
