I have a HP Pavilion A6300 with DDR2 DIMM memory and currently have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200. I want to upgrade to AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400. Will it be compatible to my computer if I change my processor to AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400? The best knowledge I have so far is that they are both compatible to Socket AM2 which is the socket of my PC and from what I have searched so far is that AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400 supports DDR2-800 which is I am unfamiliar of. Can you enlighten me on some things that may answer my question?

Well, not insignificant but not worth more than 60-80$. How much money the CPU would cost? If you can get it for about 60$ get it and then overclock to 3.6-3.8GHz.

Which is your budget?

For 160-200$ you can get an AM3+ mobo + AMD FX 6300/8320 which is a very nice CPU and is cheap.

About the video card If you have the PCI port usually you can use any (usually).
Ye, Athlon 64 x2 uses DDR2. But I wouldn't waste this money. Athlon 64 x2 is hardware with almost 10 year old, and the difference between 5200 and 6400 will be insignificant.

I advice you to don't buy that.

Thank you for your answer and advice. So my 5200 with 2.6GHz and an upgrade to 6400 with 3.2GHz will only cause an insignificant change? My PC has only Socket AM2 so I am looking for the best processor that will fit my socket. I know that you maybe thinking that I should buy a new PC but I still don't have enough budget for it and may not ever will... So I am settling for the best processor that is fit to whatever unit I currently have.

Now, if I just settle with my current processor following your advice, if I upgrade my video card, can you name some of the best you know that will fit my PC and of course at least will give me a boost in performance? Just for the reference I currently have an NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT connected to my PCI-E 1.1 x 16 interface. Do you think that this is the best I could ever have for my unit and there could be other that can boost my gaming performance a little.

And btw, I'm planning for an upgrade to at least boost up my gaming performance although I do understand that the best approach is to just buy a latest/gaming PC but please bear with me if you will... Thank You 😀
