Is ddr3 the ram I should be using?

Is ddr3 the ram I should be useing or is it outdated like ddr3 was outdated by ddr2 (I am only trying to build a mid level gaming pc.

DDR3 is the best available at the moment, DDR4 is not out yet and not really much available as yo when it will become available.
