Question Is DDR4 going to get phased out?

I got a new build. But the thing is it's only via DDR4 and I'm concerned if I wasted money getting to DDR4 instead of everyone going over to DDR5.

From what I'm doing I can't see anything that runs slow.

Overall if the system is performing well just stay with DDR4.

DDR4 still has a few years left in it and particularly considering that Intel opted to make it work with the new gen CPU. Pricing and availability are still very good. DDR4 was on the market such a long time that stock levels shouldn't go anywhere any time soon. But, as all things, it will slowly dwindle down, used stock become more available and common, new stock less variety and the pricing will start to increase just as DDR3 has. I don't foresee that happening in a time frame that would make a 13th gen build on DDR4 be problematic for its typical lifespan.

If you are running DDR4, it makes no sense at all to swap out your motherboard and ram for DDR5.
Any performance difference is negligible, particularly for games.

DDR4 will be available for many years to come. If you want to be sure, max out your system memory now.

More or less what I did putting 32GB into an HTPC. Also really cheap right now. As they switch DDR4 production over to DDR5 it will gradually get more expensive.

Always the used market too.

If you've already built this system then don't touch it just enjoy it. DDR5 is not going to really make any noticeable difference in most workloads, particularly with a 2060. I like your collection of SSD's, there's something to be said for having all your apps and games on SSD's.

DDR4 is going to be with us for a long time.

Heck, you can still buy DDR3 this very day!

Yes, but equivalent capacities to DDR4 cost about twice as much. Not that a lot of DDR3 boards support 16GB sticks...

2x8GB DDR3 kit though is under twenty dollars. Only 1600, but that became the standard at the end.

Thank you all for the re assurance!

I guess part of me got scared when there was rumour that windows 12 is coming and Intel's next gen core might move to only DDR5 forcing everyone to move over to Windows 12 if Microsoft doesn't let raptor lake work with DDR4.

But I'm being silly to worry about this. Thanks again everyone.

Memory type would not matter to the OS regardless. CPU compatibility maybe, but that is usually down to instruction sets.
