In Part I we talked about the features, ergonomics and basic performance of Dell's XPS M1710. This time we open the case and peak at the notebook's components and cooling systems. We also look at the M1710's temperature management capabilities, its display quality, battery life and gaming performance.

The 2500$ 7900 gtx model sounds like good value for the money here in sweden. But how will games play below the natural resolution. Oblivion will not be playable above 1280 *1024 and the natural res is 1900*1200. Most future games will have the same problem. How much of a problem is that?

I have the previous version Gen2XPS. It has the same 1920x1200 truelife panel and it actually looks OK at lower resolutions. It's not as sharp, but nothing is there that takes away from the gaming experiance (cept the lower res of course). Maybe the SLI systems can play @1920x1200, but we are still a few generations away from being able to do this with a single card.
BTW, I can play Oblivion fine @1280x1024, everything but grass shadows is turned on.

Personaly I think this is a great laptop. It may not be able to play everything at the native resolution, but if you wanted a true gaming PC you wouldn't have a laptop. The combination of the 7900GTX and T2600 is what gets me. If you want to throw down an rack up a few frags you can with out any problem, but then if you want to chill out and just browse the internet you can do that too w/o your comp dieing in an hour. Having just one spare battery can get you through most of a work day.

What I would like to see is obviously SLI in a notebook, but when that does start I want to be able to Totaly turn off the second card if I am just browsing the internet. It would be a waste to power 2 cards when you barely need one.

As I know someone will point out, no its not the greatest value. That is not the market this laptop is for, this is for mobile gaming with a side order of battery life.

I am glad to hear that you have raised the attention of the other vendors, it seems our cries for cooperation may have just been heard.

I'm eagerly looking forward to your reviews of the clevo units and the 19" SLI models.

lienware or wither monarch laptops will beat the XPS, but the dell notebook is a nice one, price kinda sketchy but its worth it in the end.

Dell makes a nice lookin box but its resellerratings.com rating of 3.32 oughta chase most people away.....buying alienware isn't going to help with all of their BBB problems. WidowPC provides a nice option with good resellerratings.com scores but at $4400 - $4700, these things just don't have the same bang for the buck.

You can easily get the same thing .... Core Duo 2.16, GeForce 7900 Go, etc etc, over at ProStar.com for at least a grand less. Look closely at the ProStar 5724 and the WidowPC 517D and then figure out who's buying what from who :? .

I have a 5724 (2600, 2 Gigs, 7200 SATA, GeForce 7900, 1920 x 1200, TV Tuner, DL burner, BT, XPPro, etc) and it beats the Dell's score by about 250 in 3DMark 2003, about 8 in 3DMark2005....for about $1400 less.

Sorry, i've heard too many bad experiences about dell. And i have one of my own.

Would you buy a radeon 9800 256 mb graphics card for $596 canadian? That's what they quoted me a couple days ago...

Back to the xps. I would never pay money for fancy lighting on a system.
