DirectStorage + HDD?
Technically yes, but no.

From MS:

"Storage Device: DirectStorage enabled games will work on all devices (. You’ll need an NVMe SSD, where the bandwidth capabilities are much higher and the storage media itself is faster, to see the significant improvements of DirectStorage. We highly recommend ensuring your game files are saved to an NVMe to get the best gaming experience."

If I replaced it with a sata ssd, would DirectStorage work in that case?

Thank you so much for answering my questions.
I noticed Direct Storage talk becoming quite loud with the coming of PC version of Ratchet and Clank:Rift Appart.
To have flawless experience, not just any NVME will do.
Probably shouldn't go below 3.5GB/s read, though just to be on the safe side,5GB or more.
Going through portals can be brutal if absolute smoothness without single stutter is required.

Samsung 980 Pro is perfect for the job at decent enough price.
