Is directx12 necessary?

so i have a simple question when will directx12 games come out approximetaly is 2016 a directx12 year? or 2017? and if so wil lthere evey be a setting to choose between directx12 and directx11 just like directx11? and directx10/9?

you'll be able to choose and no-one really knows, early 2017 at the earliest would be my guess.
