My family is moving to a rural area that only offers dsl and sattelite. We plan to get a 9mbps dsl connection. Is this enough for gaming and watching youtube at 1080p? I know it will not be better than cable but I can imagine it being more stable because it is not a shared line.

Solution

With a 9 Mb/s connection, you can expect a lot of video buffering, especially with HD video streams.

Gaming doesn't typically consume a lot of bandwidth, but I'm guessing that the upload speed on a 9 Mb/s plan will be very low. I wouldn't count on a great online gaming experience, especially with other family members using up bandwidth.

Thank you for the help. I just wanted to ask experienced people about what they think. I may be able to watch 1080p videos without buffers because I was able to do it before with 6Mb/s on sattelite.

Videos yeah, watching streams i doubt it. I have dsl and i cant watch streams at 1080p

I hope I get the speeds that are advertised.

I have a 7 Mbits down/0,8 Mbits up DSL internet with a stable ping of 20ms on speedtest.net, I play BF4 competitively and there are no issues at all. BF4 uses about 300 Kbits at max. the reason I don't get issues is that I live alone. So, that 9 Mbits DSL might not be enough for a whole family. 10-15 MBits might be enough for 2 people and 30+Mbits for more than 2 people.
