Hi guys, i'm new to pc building. I'm currently building my first one. I've been saving up for about 1 year now. I chose all the components with my cousin who has been building computers for a few years now. He says everything is fine with what we chose but I'm just looking to get a different opinion on the subject... I'm kind of an axious person.. i keep thinking about it since i've never done this before and because i invested alot of money in this.. i just want everything to be perfect..i really need to know if we picked up the right components for what i wanna do and if everything will work together... I do music production mostly. I write and record (cubase) music for video games, movies, short films etc so i need lots of space for all my plugins and programs. I'm also a gamer and plan on gamming almost everyday on this computer. so here it is:

-Intel 4770k cpu
-asus maximus vi hero motherboard
-Cooler Master hyper evo 212 plus
-EVGA supernova g2 750w 80+gold
-G.skills ripjaws x series 16gb (2x8gb)
-SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
-Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD
-Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with Upgraded USB 3.0
-EVGA Geforce gtx 980 superclocked
-Blu ray burner

Thank you very much for your answers. It would be greatly appreciated :)

The 4790k is a Good processor I have that one myself clocked at 4.8ghz without any effort at all. You will get a small advantage with that hybrid hdd in your music production if you store your projects there. I am using only my ssd for nuendo myself, so if you tend to primarily use the ssd for your music and editing programs, you can save the money and get a standard hdd for storage.
The price does not defend the advantage in my opinion.
I believe the hero vi maxinus should ne compatible with the 4790k off the bat.
I would get a standard (ie non hybrid) HDD since you already have an SSD.,

I would also consider getting the Haswell refresh (either i5 4690K or i7 4790K) and a Z97 motherboard. No real reason to go with last gen parts, especially since it appears that Intel has done a better job of attaching the heatspreader to the die to reduce heat.

If your using this system strictly for gaming, save yourself some money and go with an i5. You'll see practically zero benefit from the hyperthreading in gaming. I have a very similar system (same motherboard, CPU, and SSD) and the only reason I went with the i7 is I do some WCG crunching.

Everything else looks fine.

No i will primarely use it for work. Gamming is an extra. But why choose an hdd ? isn't the hybrid faster ? Do you think it's not a good idea or is it just not ''worth'' it..?

The hybrid will be faster in some cases than a normal HDD. The most accessed files will be cached in the flash. However sustained reads and writes (particularly large files) will not benefit from the flash on the drive. So if you are working with large files, they are going to be on the platter (mechanical part) of the drive and not on the flash.

I assume you intend to use the SSD for the boot / OS drive and your software (your work software?), and the HDD for storage and games. Really any files that you want to be able to read and write quickly should be on the SSD anyway.

So ultimately I think that the cost versus the practical benefit from the hybrid HDD won't be worth it.

Is your work software highly multithreaded (ie use more than 4 threads)? Or do you have more than one program working at a time? If so, then hyperthreading may be a benefit, if not then you can save some money.

If you were doing 3D renders or content creation where the software is very multithreaded, I would suggest forgetting the Haswell and go for Haswell-E (2011 v3) CPU and motherboard. Like the i7 5920K or 5930K. This would be a hexa-core with hyperthreading.

Yes it is multithreaded as i often have more than one program working at one time but the 5920k and 5930k are way out of my price range for now... But i will definetly go with the 4790k like you said since it is now the same price as the 4770k on newegg. As for the hybrid i'll think about it... I already have the maximus vi hero motherboard though.. it is brand new.. Will it work with the 4790k? Or will i have to ''uptade the bios'' (i dont know, i've seen that somewhere online.. like i said i'm not an expert lol)

You will have to update the BIOS and the IME part of the BIOS. Depending on when you got the motherboard, it may already have the update. However if it doesn't, you'll have to do a BIOS Flashback which should be detailed in the manual. The problem lies in the IME firmware, without it updated, the new Devils's Canyon / Maximus Hero VI combo won't post. The BIOS Flashback will actually let you update the firmware without a processor installed.

I bought the mobo last week (brand new). Do you think i'm safe ? If not, how do i update the bios...? Its a new build

It depends on how quick turn around is at the place you bought it and how many were in the channel before the BIOS update.

The update can be done without a processor through the BIOS flashback option.

So if I were you I would see if the system POST's with the Devils Canyon CPU in, if not and you are relatively sure you've don't everything correctly as far as building it is concerned, then I would proceed with the BIOS flashback opton.

I will see if I can dig up a link to the instructions that detail this exact situation. I've read quite a bit about it on a few forum threads. I think there is one at ROG's forums as well. I will update this post once I've found it.

Okay!! Thanks a lot man
