I have a friend with Amd fx-8350 and he thinks this is one of the best cpu-s and he said to me the other day that i3-8100 will bottleneck gtx 1060 6 gb and i would rather get fx instead. Can somebody please convince him that the fx is not that good and explain why because i'm tired of the crap he talks.

Not to mention that, generally, it seems that motherboard/cpu combos for the old AM3/AM3+ platform can cost more than the newer platforms, and still delivers less performance.

There is no good reason to buy a new system based on the FX chips.

The main issue with an FX 8xxx series CPU is that it sounds good on paper, 8 cores! Except the design is not really 8 full cores AND the core efficiency is inferior to Intel. So in practical terms it's more of a 4 core CPU, and those cores are relatively slow too.

In theory it's possible to come up with scenarios where software takes advantage of an FX 8xxx CPU, but in real life that's not gonna happen for most people.

Your friend is mistaken, the FX series are obsolete. Here is an example of the FX8370 being outperformed by the older i3 6300 in a modern game, this is typical of modern games and the FX range.

Another way of looking at it is the FX8350 is about 6 years old and uses an 8 year old design. It wasn't the strongest when new either.

Agree with all of the above.
Sooooooo many people get suckered into buying these chips because they're soooooo chea - 'affordable'.
Then are later baffled as to why they can't get high fps/play high settings.

Even now, that holds some truth. Ryzen is good. Even moreso for folks on a budget, but the latest Intel offerings are still stronger.
Thinking on that, Ryzen's dependability on faster ram sort of hurts it with how crazy the ram prices are right now. Intel cpus don't care as much about it.

depends on what budget your are talking....if you can pick up a used fx system for cheap then it still can be better $$$ for performance then a brand new intel i8 system....and the fx8350 is not that outdated... . i have a fx8350 and r290x graphics card and have no issue gaming on mid/high settings....but then again im only looking for 60fps as thats all my monitor supports...but no i would not go buy a new fx system today....its easly surpassed by newer cpus both amd and intels.
