And is it a good unit? Anything else is way too pricy.

Well, on ltt psu tier list, this psu fits in the C category. So I thought it would be good. Why is it a bad unit?

It's on the right tier. C is not particularly good; it's a poor choice for a very power-hungry, spiky GPU like the 7970/280X. If you were taking a chance on a brand, I would think you'd push the envelope on a brand that didn't have recent problems with fires. One of the reasons you can get Gigabyte PSUs cheap right now is that people are avoiding them like the plague.
