Hi

I am upgrading to the GTX 1070 when it launches on the 10th of June next month, but I am a bit skeptical on purchasing it on launch. Maybe this is the gamer in me talking (With so many bad launch days for games). Will it be safe to buy the GTX 1070 on launch or should I wait an extra month to see how well it does. My concern is that because it's a new architecture it will have compatibility issues with older/current games, because they are made with current architecture in mind? I have little to no expertise in this area of computing so forgive me if this is a silly question.

Thanks for your time!!! :) .

it may be day-1 it may be a couple of weeks until the custom cards come out. And MSI and such don;t take the cards and rebrand them, they take the cip and build their own design, ergo teh possibility for better overclocks/cooling etc
Unfortunately , the first cards that will be available for purchase are the more expensive Founder's Edition/reference cards. I expect all the good custom models to come out some time after the June 10 launch.... and they should be cheaper as well. So I would wait it out.

Nope, no "architecture compatibility problems", such thing does not exist. 😀

But like said the "founders edition" which basically is a reference card is 100$ more than the 3rd party versions that will come out later, those are the ones worth getting imho because they will have higher clock speeds which translates into a higher OC, custom fans, all that extra marketing crap companies add, etc. You might aswell wait if you're not in a rush.

While your concearns about backward performance are completly invalid(the 1070 will wipe the floor with any older game and will have no compatibility issues), everything said above is correct. I wouldn't rush until the custom cards come out.

I think the Founder's Edition cards are a big thank you to their partners to encourage people to buy their custom versions, and have people be excited when they only cost ~$50 more than the base price. If the Founder's/reference card was $379, people would be more hesitant to pay the extra for a custom card. Now that same custom card seems like a bargain when compared to the reference.

Judging by the specs I've seen, it's definitely NOT going to be as fast as a 980 Ti, let a lone a Titan X. NVIDIA most definitely cherry picked one or two specific games, but the rest will fail to deliver.

Same thing happend to the GTX 1080, which is already out. They claimed it was faster than 980's in SLI, yet in majority of titles, they're neck in neck, or 980's are ahead.

I think this is a very realistic assumption, though we still need to know the core specs, but a huge cut from a GTX 1080, we know that much.

We'll know for sure when the GTX 1070 drops, but don't expect big things. I would personally focus on the used market, specifically the 980 Ti's.

All the best!

Are custom models when companies like MSI and ASUS use the cards and brand them under their name? And how long after the original release before the custom cards come out?

Thanks for you answer!! 😀
