Hi guys.

I want to get a new monitor to play with my PS5 at 1080p and 120fps.
My question is simple: is a full hd monitor with 144hz refresh rate and an HDMI 1.4 port enough?

I heard statements that HDMI 1.4 is enough, while others say you need to have an HDMI 2.0 in order to be able to run games at 1080p @ 120fps .

Can you please clarify it for my?

The monitor I'm considering buying is the AOC 24G2U.

Thank you.

I see, but it looks like the monitor is only able to deliver those hz @ 1080p if connected by Display port, and not HDMI...

120 with HDMI 1.4

HDMI 1.4 was released on June 5, 2009, and first came to market after Q2 of 2009.[63][100][101] Retaining the bandwidth of the previous version, HDMI 1.4 added support for 4096 × 2160 at 24 Hz, 3840 × 2160 at 24, 25, and 30 Hz, and 1920 × 1080 at 120 H

Cannot be determined from that information alone.

Please see section 5 here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/how-to-connect-to-a-120-hz-display.3268285/

Wow, thank you very much, awesome information.

So 1080p @ 120hz on HDMI 1.4 depends on the monitor itself, and not on the hdmi port.
My purpose is to buy the AOC 24G2U to play with the Playstation 5.

I looked into the list you provided, but this monitor is not listed there (probably because it's newer than the list itself).
I went on and searched for the monitor's user manual, and I found it https://aoc-pim.s3.amazonaws.com/24G2U/English.pdf.

It states:
Max resolution 1920x1080@60Hz(D-SUB) 1920x1080@144Hz(HDMI、DP)
So it should be perfect for the PS5, right? Or am I missing any important detail?

Thank you for your help.

Yes, should be good.

I need to update the list but don't have time at the moment :)

Some guy is stating that no 1.4 HDMI monitor will be recognized as supporting 120fps on PS5, and even some HDMI 2.0 won't...
He tested 2 HDMI 2.0 and got no luck:
Clearly it is not dependent on "HDMI version" then :p

I am keeping an eye on the situation as it unfolds but right now I don't have any definitive information on exactly what the requirements are for the PS5 to recognize 120 Hz capability. It may be something that will need to be resolved by Sony in a software update. I also plan to do some testing on this subject this weekend.

I tested these monitors on the PS5:
  • AOC 24G2
  • AOC C24G1
  • ViewSonic XG2401
  • ViewSonic VX2458-C-mhd
  • LG27GL850
I was able to get 1080p 120 Hz on the PS5 on all of them.

Great work.
I believe the AOC 24G2 should be the exact same thing as the AOC 24G2U, so it should be ok. Did you test it with Call of Duty, or how were you able to see it was working at 120fps?

thank you very much.

I tested it with Call of Duty CW and confirmed it with the PS5 menu, the monitor onscreen menu, and with a high speed camera.

Note that it defaults to 1080p 60 Hz when you first plug it in, you need to start the game for 120 Hz to enable.

Hello can I ask what you monitor you picked up in the end please DonKedo and how it has performed for you? What one would you recommend from the list Glenwing? The information has already been a lifesaver thanks
